How licensing works

The ANJ, successor to ARJEL, approves operators product by product. Poker is licensed as a “jeu de cercle”, separate from betting, and every approval appears on the regulator’s site. Licensed sites run on .fr domains, and any gambling advertising in France has to carry a fixed warning about addiction and the Joueurs Info Service number.

The market

Winamax is the largest room in the France-Spain-Portugal pool and PokerStars.fr is second. The remaining approvals are network skins or betting brands with a poker tab bolted on. Since no operator holds a French online casino licence, poker sits at the front of these sites rather than next to the slots.

Yes. France legalised online poker, sports betting and horse-race betting in 2010. Online casino games remain illegal, so licensed sites offer poker without slots or roulette.
