Playing live poker in St Julian’s

St Julian’s is where Malta’s poker happens. Portomaso Casino, in the marina complex of the same name, is the larger room and the only one on the island with cash games every day of the week. Casino Malta by Olympic, a fifteen-minute walk away at St George’s Bay, has the bigger casino floor and hosts the Battle of Malta, the festival that put the island on the tournament map.

Both are free to enter and both register you on the first visit, so bring a passport or photo ID. Visitors may play from 18; Maltese nationals must be 25. Games are in euros and English is the language of the tables. The two venues are close enough that travelling players routinely check both in an evening, and during festival weeks the fields spill into nearby hotel ballrooms.
