Casinos in New Zealand are licensed under the Gambling Act 2003 and supervised by the Department of Internal Affairs. No new casino licences are issued, so the six that exist are the whole market, and SkyCity operates the largest of them.
The minimum age for a casino is 20, not 18 – higher than in Australia and most of Europe. A government photo ID is required at the door, and the poker room additionally requires a SkyCity loyalty card, which is issued free on the spot with ID. Play is in New Zealand dollars and rake is capped.
