The Los Angeles rooms are card rooms, not casinos. California licenses two very different kinds of venue: tribal casinos, which operate under compacts on tribal land, and commercial card rooms, which are licensed by the Bureau of Gambling Control and the California Gambling Control Commission and are restricted to card games.
A card room has no slot machines, no roulette and no house-banked games. The venue may not bank a game or win from its outcome, so poker is played purely player against player and the room takes a rake or a time collection. For the games that look house-banked – blackjack variants, pai gow, baccarat-style games – the dealer position rotates and is usually taken by a third-party provider of proposition player services, a separate registered company that puts up the bank. The rules covering that arrangement were tightened in 2026 and are being litigated, but poker itself is unaffected.
Minimum age is 21 and a government photo ID is required. Both rooms below are open around the clock and sit east and south-east of downtown, roughly 20 minutes by car without traffic.
